DAY-24: Cruising the Pacific

DAY-24: Cruising the Pacific

Day – 24: Thursday, March 12, 2020

Starting Location: At Sea Aboard the M.S. Marina
Ending Location: At Sea Aboard the M.S. Marina

Well our first of two sea days before arriving in Peru began with a time zone change, our clocks are now the same as the U.S. eastern time zone. That meant an extra hour in our day and a late breakfast. Wait, do I have that backwards is there one less hour in the day?

You know there's not a lot planned for the day when the ship's "Plan of the Day" has a lead story about epaulets.

For our morning enrichment we attended the lecture by Dr. Kus entitled "Nazca Lines, Atacama Geoglyphs and Ovalle Rock Art". The Nazca lines are reported to be indications of alien visits to Earth, well if you believe the History Channel folks. Dr. Kus would prefer that we believe the lines were created by bored ancient peoples in one of the driest deserts of the world. I've borrowed a couple of images of the Nazca lines as we will not be getting an aerial view of the lines ourselves as while in Pisco, Peru we're headed to Ballestas Island, the Peruvian Galapagos.

For the lines, glyphs and rock art the discussion centered on ancient life in the area, clearly people with much time on their hands such that the entertainment was to make long geometric lines often interspersed with other earth-art creations.  We had visited the Ovalle Rock art as described in yesterday's post.

After being enriched Sheila headed off for the bridge team (as in cards, not ship's conning station). For me it was a day of blogs, a little Helium work and more walking in circles, or more correctly defined ovoid shapes around the decks. I did fill out the various entry forms for Peru, we had to complete baggage declarations and a health screening form targeting COVID virus exposures.
As best we know no one on board has the virus or has been exposed to the virus, so we should be good to go.

For the afternoon Verne Lundquist was doing his final show, it was more of a Q&A session than straight presentation. That said with the three USNA alum sitting in the audience he opened the talk with a USNA story, seems that in ten years of broadcasting the Army-Navy football game, Navy had won nine of the ten games. We need to get him back in the broadcast booth. BEAT ARMY! The 2016 Army-Navy game was Verne's final college football broadcast.

Once again we were scheduled for a wine tasting in the ship's La Reserve Wine Bar; this to be the final tasting of the cruise. To be clear not our final taste of wine for we have a several days yet to go, just the final formal "tasting" where we're being educated.  Today's tasting was described as the "Italian Voyage", guess we know where this wine came from.

Dinner tonight was in Chez Jacques, another fine dining experience, tonight I had dover sole, and didn't pay an extra dime. (The "no extra cost" is an inside joke few will recognize)

That's it, not many pictures for today but the sunset was a great one.
